This species, Cocytius antaeus Drury, 1773, has a wingspan ranging from 126 to 178 mm. It is very rare in North America, and was once thought to be the only insect on the continent with a proboscis long enough to pollinate the ghost orchid. Its distribution extends from Brazil through Central America, and into southern California, southern Texas, and southern Florida in the United States.
