The species currently known as Prietocella barbara was originally described under the scientific name Cochlicella barbara (Linnaeus, 1758). It is a species of small, high-spired, air-breathing land snail, a pulmonate gastropod mollusk that belongs to the family Geomitridae. This snail is native to Europe. Its native range extends along the coast, from northern Portugal to the northwestern Mediterranean region. It has been widely introduced to other nearby countries, including England and Wales. It is also an introduced species in Australia and South Africa.
