About Coccothrinax alta (O.F.Cook) Becc.
Like other species in the genus Coccothrinax, Coccothrinax alta is a fan palm. Mature trees reach 2–6 m in height, with some individuals growing as tall as 11 m. This species produces light yellow flowers, and its fruit turns purple-black when fully ripe. It grows at elevations ranging from lowlands up to 350 m above sea level. In terms of distribution and habitat, it grows on limestone substrates in northern Puerto Rico, and on volcanic substrates on islands off eastern Puerto Rico. It has been documented on mainland Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra, and throughout the Virgin Islands: Saint Croix, St. Thomas and St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guana Island, Tortola and Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.
