About Coccinia rehmannii Cogn.
Coccinia rehmannii Cogn. is a perennial climber or creeper. Its stems can reach up to 4 m, being glabrous or having broad - based trichomes, and often densely white pustulate when old, especially in drier areas. The petiole is 0.2 - 4.2 cm long, glabrous or with erect, broad - based or up to 1.5 mm long, articulate trichomes, or only wart - like, and sometimes densely white pustulate when old in drier areas. Leaves measure 0.9 - 9.7 x 1.4 - 16.6 cm, are shallowly to deeply 3 - or 5 - lobate, auriculate, sometimes lobulate, and rarely cordate. Lobes and lobules usually extend, rarely point towards the tip, and are narrowly to broadly triangulate to lanceolate. The leaf margin is rather remotely denticulate, with an acute to obtuse, apiculate apex. The upper leaf surface is more or less densely white pustulate, with pustules sometimes having a thick, small trichome, and nerves often having thick, small trichomes. The lower leaf surface is glabrous, sometimes with small, blackish glands between nerves, and nerves usually have erect trichomes, sometimes wart - like. The probract is usually absent, and if present, it is up to 3.5 mm. Tendrils are simple. Male flowers are 1 - 3 solitary; if fasciculate or in few - flowered racemes, they are accompanied by 1 - 2 flowers. The common peduncle is 0.7 - 4.5 (- 8.5) cm, glabrous or with long, articulate trichomes. The pedicel of flowers in inflorescences is 0.6 - 2.8 cm, with bracts up to 2.5 mm or absent. The pedicel of solitary flowers is (0.2 -) 0.5 - 5 (- 9) cm, glabrous or especially at the apex with long, articulate trichomes. The perianth tube usually has long (> 0.5 mm) trichomes, rarely almost glabrous. Calyx lobes are 0.2 - 7 mm, narrowly lanceolate or lineal, erect when young and later spreading to reflexed. The corolla is 0.8 - 2.5 cm long, buff to more or less pale yellow, sometimes with green venation, and its lobes are 0.3 - 1.1 cm. The filament column is pale buff, anthers are buff, and pollen sacs are yellow. The female flower is solitary. The pedicel is 0.4 - 1.5 cm, glabrous or with long, articulate trichomes. The hypanthium usually has long (> 0.5 mm) trichomes, rarely almost glabrous, and calyx lobes and corolla are like those in male flowers. The ovary is rarely glabrous and often more or less densely covered with articulate trichomes. The style is columnar and green, and stigmas are 2 - lobed and yellow. Immature fruit, rarely also at maturity, has whitish, longitudinal mottling that develops a dark green corona during ripening. Ripe fruit is globose to elliptical, 1 - 6.2 x 1 - 2.8 cm, glabrous or with few articulate trichomes, and bright orange to red. Seeds are 4.5 - 7 x 2 - 3.5 x 1 - 1.2 mm, asymmetrically obovate to somewhat falcate, with a flat face.
