About Coccinella monticola Mulsant, 1850

This species of lady beetle, Coccinella monticola Mulsant, 1850, has a body length ranging from 5.2 to 7 mm (0.20 to 0.28 inches). It is a fairly recognizable species, with two similar oval spots on each of its elytra, plus a single spot behind its head. The size and rounded shape of these spots can vary between individuals. While the forewings are most commonly red, they may also be orange or yellow. This species can be easily mistaken for Coccinella difficilis. The range of Coccinella monticola extends from Yukon Territory in the north southward to New Mexico, with Washington and Wisconsin marking the outer edges of this main range. A small separate population occurs in the region stretching from the Great Lakes to Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.
