About Clitellaria ephippium (Fabricius, 1775)

Adults of Clitellaria ephippium reach a body length of 10 to 13 millimeters (0.39 to 0.51 inches). Most of the body is black, with a bright red mesonotum. Antennae are not longer than the head; the third antenna segment is made of five sub-segments, and the stylet is made of two segments. The dark eyes are quite hairy. The scutellum is hairy, and the mesonotum has two strong apico-lateral spines. The scutum bears two strong lateral spines, located between the transverse suture and the point where the wings attach to the body. The abdomen is relatively wide, and the wings are dark. This species can be found in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Hungary, central and southern Russia, Spain, and Switzerland.
