Clematis fremontii S.Watson produces hairy stems that can reach up to 70 cm (28 inches) tall, though most stems grow between 15 and 40 cm (5.9 and 15.7 inches) in height. Its leaves are leathery, oval-shaped, and can grow up to 14 cm (5.5 inches) long and 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide. Its inflorescence consists of a single urn-shaped flower. The flower bears hairy, bluish or purple lance-shaped sepals with greenish tips. Its fruits are long achenes that grow in clustered groups. This species typically grows on limestone soils in glades and prairies, and it is sometimes planted in gardens.
