About Clarkia modesta Jeps.
Clarkia modesta Jeps. is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family, with the common name Waltham Creek clarkia. This species is endemic to California. It grows in the woodlands of several of the state’s central mountain ranges, including the North Coast Ranges, Central Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is an erect annual herb that often grows to over half a meter in height. Its leaves can be oval, linear, or lance-shaped, and measure 2 to 4 centimeters long. The inflorescence holds both open blooming flowers and closed, hanging flower buds. When the petals bloom from one side of the bud, the sepals remain fused together. Petals are about one centimeter long, and range in shape from diamond to widely lance-shaped. Their color ranges from pale to deep pink, and petals are generally marked with dark flecks or spots.
