Cladonia portentosa (Dufour) Coem. forms compact, interwoven mats that can grow up to 6 centimeters tall. This lichen is richly branched. Typically, each branch divides into three new branches, though the penultimate branch sometimes divides into two instead. The angle of its branching is larger than the branching angle of Cladonia rangiferina.
