Citharexylum spinosum L. is a tree that can grow up to 15 meters (49 feet) tall. Its leaves are ovate to elliptic in shape, 4 to 20 centimeters (1.6 to 7.9 inches) long, and have orange petioles. It produces small white flowers year-round on hanging axillary and terminal racemes and panicles that measure 20 to 40 centimeters (7.9 to 15.7 inches) in length. Its fruit consists of red to black subglobose drupes, with a diameter of 7 to 10 millimeters (0.28 to 0.39 inches).
