About Cissus discolor Blume
Cissus discolor Blume, commonly known as the rex begonia vine and also synonymized as Cissus javana, is a species of flowering plant in the grape family Vitaceae. Its native range covers tropical Asia, including south-central China, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Mainland Southeast Asia, Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, and the Philippines, where it grows at elevations between 600 and 2000 meters. It has also been introduced to Trinidad and Tobago. This plant is a tender evergreen climbing species with a slender growth habit. It typically grows to 2.5 meters (8 feet) in length, and usually reaches only 30 centimeters (1 foot) in width. The leaves of Cissus discolor are edible; young leaves are eaten raw or cooked as a sour-tasting vegetable. In cultivation, it is hardy to USDA Zone 11, and is often recommended for growing in hanging baskets. To develop the full leaf color of its variegated foliage without scorching the leaves, it needs a proper balance of sun and shade.
