This plant species is currently classified as Cipuropsis capituligera (Griseb.) Christenh. & Byng, and was previously known under the scientific name Mezobromelia capituligera when it was placed in the genus Mezobromelia. It is native to the West Indies (including Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Trinidad, and the Leeward Islands) and northern South America (including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru).
