Chrysotoxum cautum is identified by the following characteristics: its wing length measures 10–13 mm, it has an orange wing stigma, its apical antennomere is the same length as antennomeres 1 and 2 combined, it has a relatively flat abdomen, and it has exceptionally large genitalia that extend past the hind margin of sternite 4.
