About Chrysops caecutiens (Linnaeus, 1758)
Chrysops caecutiens (Linnaeus, 1758) adults reach a length of about 8.5–10 millimetres, or 0.33–0.39 inches. Its mesonotum and scutellum are glossy black and covered in yellow-brown hairs. The compound eyes display red and green reflections, and bear dark spots. Each transparent wing has dark brown patches positioned at its top and centre. The abdomen has a distinct black inverted-V marking, which gives the species its common name "splayed deer fly". All legs, including the tibiae of the middle pair of legs, are black. This species is active from May through September. It is present across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, and the Near East. These horseflies prefer to live in shaded marshlands and damp woodlands.
