About Chrysococcyx basalis (Horsfield, 1821)

Horsfield's bronze cuckoo is a small cuckoo species in the Cuculidae family. On average, it weighs 22 g (0.78 oz). Its back has iridescent green and bronze coloring, and it has incomplete brown barring that runs from its neck to its tail. It can be told apart from other bronze cuckoos by its white eyebrow and brown eye stripe. This species is common across most of Australia, where it prefers drier open woodlands rather than heavily forested areas. It was formerly classified in the genus Chrysococcyx, and its scientific name is currently published as Chrysococcyx basalis (Horsfield, 1821). The species is native to Australia and Southeast Asia, where it occurs in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and southern Thailand. In 2024, the first known specimen of this species was recorded in New Zealand.
