About Chrysaora lactea Eschscholtz, 1829

Chrysaora lactea, commonly called the Milk Sea Nettle, is a species of sea nettle belonging to the family Pelagiidae. This jellyfish can reach a bell diameter of up to 25 centimeters (10 inches), and it is native to the Atlantic coast of South America. It occurs primarily off the coast of Brazil, and is commonly found off the coasts of neighboring countries including Argentina and Cuba. It has also been reported from the Caribbean region, but genetic studies show the Caribbean population is more closely related to Chrysaora chesapeakei. A full taxonomic review is needed to clarify this classification issue. Because this species lives near coasts, it has a negative impact on local human activities. Large aggregations of C. lactea, called blooms, can harm tourism due to their stings and their effects on local marine life.
