About Chrysaora chinensis Vanhöffen, 1888
Chrysaora chinensis, commonly known as the Indonesian sea nettle or Malaysian Sea Nettle, is a species of jellyfish that belongs to the family Pelagiidae. This species is native to the central Indo-Pacific region, and its sting is considered dangerous. It was first formally described by Ernst Vanhöffen in 1888. In 1910, it was classified as a variant of C. helvola, and in 1954 it was reclassified as a synonym of C. helvola. Other taxonomic authorities have also previously treated it as a synonym of various other species in the Chrysaora genus. Although the type specimen of C. chinensis is apparently no longer existing, this central Indo-Pacific population is distinct from related Chrysaora species native to the northeast Pacific (the region where C. helvola was originally described) and from related Chrysaora found in other locations. For this reason, recent taxonomic authorities recognize Chrysaora chinensis as a valid, separate species.
