About Chroogomphus rutilus (Schaeff.) O.K.Mill.

Chroogomphus rutilus, commonly called the brown slimecap or copper spike, is a fungal species belonging to the Gomphidiaceae family. Jacob Christian Schäffer first described it scientifically under the name Agaricus rutilus in 1774. Orson K. Miller, Jr. later transferred it to the genus Chroogomphus in 1964. This fungus forms ectomycorrhizal relationships with Pinus species, and can be found in Europe and North America. Its fruit bodies are edible, but they are not highly regarded as food. Gomphidius viscidus is an outdated synonym for this mushroom.
