About Chorthippus biguttulus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Chorthippus biguttulus, commonly known as the bow-winged grasshopper, is one of the most common grasshopper species found in the dry grasslands of northern and central Europe. This species belongs to the biguttulus-group, a collection of species that are very hard to distinguish from one another based on morphological features alone. Previously, Chorthippus biguttulus, C. brunneus, and C. mollis were all classified together as a single species named Stauroderus variabilis. The three species were later separated from one another based on differences in their song characteristics. The distribution range of the bow-winged grasshopper reaches from Finland and Scandinavia in the north, down to the Alps and Pyrenees in the south, and extends far into Asia, including Japan.
