About Chorthippus albomarginatus (De Geer, 1773)

Chorthippus albomarginatus, commonly called the lesser marsh grasshopper, is a common grasshopper species found in European grasslands. Despite its common name, it inhabits both damp marshy areas and dry grasslands, including salt marshes and coastal habitats. The species' range stretches from Finland and southern Scandinavia in the north to Spain and Italy in the south. It was originally restricted to the southern regions of the United Kingdom, but has been expanding its range northward over time. The calling song of the lesser marsh grasshopper is very similar to that of Chorthippus brunneus, and tends to be slightly slower. It produces 2 to 6 chirps, with each chirp lasting roughly half a second. Competing males of this species may produce an 'alternation song' between one another. Females lay their eggs at the base of grass blades.
