About Chorizanthe membranacea Benth.
Chorizanthe membranacea Benth. is a species of flowering plant in the buckwheat family, commonly known by the name pink spineflower. It is native to Oregon and California, where it is widespread and quite common in some areas, and can be found across a wide variety of habitats. This woolly-textured herb grows in an erect form, reaching a maximum height near 1 metre (3.3 ft). Most parts of the plant may carry a pink tint. Its leaves are mostly linear in shape, and can grow both along the stem and at the plant's base. The longest leaves may reach up to 5 centimeters. The plant's inflorescence is a dense cluster of flowers. Each individual flower is surrounded by six fused bracts that are generally white to pinkish in color, and tipped with hooked awns. The flower itself is only a few millimeters long, white to pink, and quite hairy. Small additional inflorescences sometimes grow in the cauline leaf axils along the stem. Chorizanthe membranacea is easily told apart from other spineflowers by its relatively abundant leaves, its tall height and upright growth habit, and the fusion of involucre bracts into a continuous single structure.
