About Chorisops tibialis (Meigen, 1820)

Chorisops tibialis, commonly known as the dull four-spined legionnaire, is a soldier fly species native to the Palearctic realm. It is a small, slender fly, measuring 3 to 4 mm in length. Males have a metallic green thorax and scutellum, while these structures are greenish black in females. The humeri may have a yellowish tint. The scutellum has four yellow spines. For both sexes, the abdomen is yellow across its central disc, and black along the sides and posterior end. Males have black and tan banded legs, while females have yellow legs with dark tarsi. Its clear wings feature a dark stigma. This species inhabits moist or shaded tree-covered areas. Males sometimes form and move in rapidly moving swarms. Adult individuals are active from June to September. The saproxylic larvae live in decaying wood debris and rot holes inside trees.
