About Chorisochismus dentex (Pallas, 1769)

Chorisochismus dentex reaches a maximum total length of 30 centimeters (12 inches), and it is tied with the similarly sized South American Sicyases sanguineus as the largest species in the clingfish family. This fish has a broad head that tapers to a narrow tail, and it has large eyes. Its body color varies, but it is typically mottled greenish or reddish. Dead, dried specimens of Chorisochismus dentex are occasionally found by beachcombers; their often red color, unusual body shape, and proportionally large teeth have led some people to call them "sea monsters". This species occurs off the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. It can be found from intertidal rock pools down to a depth of at least 15 meters (49 feet). It is most common in habitats with flat boulders, but it may also occur in kelp beds or cave crevices.
