About Choerodon fasciatus (Günther, 1867)
Choerodon fasciatus, commonly known as the harlequin tuskfish, reaches a maximum length of 30 cm (12 in). This species is brightly colored, with roughly 8 pairs of alternating orange, blue, and white vertical bands along its flanks, and it has distinctive sharp blue teeth. Specimens collected in Australia typically display more intense coloration than those found elsewhere. The species has an anti-equatorial distribution. In the northern hemisphere, its range extends from Okinawa in southern Japan to the northern Philippines. In the southern hemisphere, it can be found in Papua New Guinea, along the Queensland coast of Australia, at Lord Howe Island, and in New Caledonia. Harlequin tuskfish live on reefs, at depths between 5 and 35 m (16 to 115 ft).
