About Chlosyne gabbii (Behr, 1863)

Chlosyne gabbii (Behr, 1863) has a wingspan ranging from about 32 to 45 millimetres, or 1.3 to 1.8 inches. The upperside of its wings is checkered with bright orange-brown and black markings, while the underside of the hindwing features pearly-white spots. Female individuals of this species are lighter in color than males. Adult Chlosyne gabbii can be found from May to July each year. The larvae of this species feed on Corethrogyne filaginifolia, Heterotheca grandiflora, and Haplopappus squarrosus. This is a very rare species, distributed only in California, which is located in the western United States. It is threatened across its entire native range.
