About Chlorotabanus crepuscularis (Bequaert, 1926)

Chlorotabanus crepuscularis is a species of horse fly belonging to the family Tabanidae. It is the only green tabanid found in North America, with a range extending from Texas to Delaware. This species is a blood-feeding (sanguinivorous) fly; in Florida, adult Chlorotabanus crepuscularis can be observed from March through September, reaching peak activity between May and mid-July. Females can sense carbon dioxide, a sense that helps them feed on mammals. This species is most active at night. Chlorotabanus crepuscularis larvae are predaceous. They live in soil adjacent to water, on floating vegetation, and can also inhabit forest sand. The blood of this insect is blue. The fly has brown eyes that glow yellow when exposed to 385 nm UV light.
