The blue-chinned sapphire (scientific name Chlorestes notata (G.C.Reich, 1793)) measures 8.9 cm (3.5 in) long and weighs 3.8 g (1⁄8 oz). Its bill is fairly straight; the upper mandible is black, and the lower mandible is reddish. Males have primarily green plumage that is darker on the upper body, with white thighs, a forked metallic blue tail, and a blue upper throat. Females differ from males by having green-spotted white underparts.
