About Chlamys islandica (O.F.Müller, 1776)
Chlamys islandica, commonly known as the Iceland scallop, is a species of bivalve mollusc that belongs to the family Pectinidae. This North Atlantic scallop attaches to hard surfaces like rocks, and can be found from the intertidal zone down to a depth of 200 m (660 ft). In the northwest Atlantic Ocean, its distribution ranges from Greenland to Massachusetts. In the northeast Atlantic, it occurs from Norway and Iceland to the Faroes. Subfossil remains of its shell have been found further south than its modern living range, including the British Isles. This species is highly variable in shell colour, and can reach a maximum size of 14 cm (5.5 in).
