About Chenopodium fremontii S.Watson

Chenopodium fremontii S.Watson is an annual herb with an erect stem that reaches a maximum height of 50 to 80 centimeters. The plant has a powdery texture, which is especially prominent on its leaves and flowers. Its leaves grow up to 4 centimeters long, are oval to triangular in shape, and typically have a few lobes. The inflorescence forms a spike made up of several clusters of tiny, tightly packed flowers. Each flower has five lobes, and it coats the developing fruit as it grows. This species flowers from June to October. Many Native American tribes use Chenopodium fremontii as food: they eat its greens as a vegetable, and use its seeds as a grain to make bread and porridge.
