Oblong turtles (Chelodina oblonga Gray, 1841) typically have a carapace length under 30 cm, though the maximum recorded carapace length for this species is 40 cm. Newly hatched oblong turtles have a carapace length of 30 mm. This turtle occupies a wide variety of freshwater habitats, including wetlands, lakes, and rivers. It is also able to survive in human-modified urban and agricultural environments, such as urban lakes and dams. The oblong turtle is an opportunistic carnivore. It feeds primarily on macro-invertebrates, and also consumes carrion, frogs, and fish. Hatchlings additionally eat mosquito larvae and aquatic plants.
