About Cheiracanthium punctorium (Villers, 1789)
Cheiracanthium punctorium (Villers, 1789) is a spider that is one of multiple species commonly called yellow sac spiders. This species occurs naturally from central Europe to Central Asia, and it is most abundant in the steppes of Central Asia. Individuals of this species grow to around 15 millimeters in length. Their bite can break through human skin; the experience of the bite is often compared to a wasp sting, usually being slightly more severe than a wasp sting. People who are susceptible to this bite may experience stronger reactions, including nausea. There is recorded evidence that C. punctorium is expanding its range into northeastern Germany, specifically in the state of Brandenburg. The primary cause of this spread is an increase in fallow, uncultivated land in the region. Changing weather patterns that have led to greater aridity and lower precipitation may also contribute to this range expansion.
