About Cheilosia caerulescens (Meigen, 1822)
This is a description of Cheilosia caerulescens (Meigen, 1822), a species of Cheilosia. It is bluish-grey, with dark legs that sometimes have pale knees. Distinct dark shades of varying extent cover the two cross veins on its wings. Its lower face is strongly protruding, its third antennal segment is brownish-red, and it has bare eyes. In terms of distribution and biology, it occurs from Britain and the Netherlands south to the Pyrenees and France, east through Central Europe to European Russia, and southeast to Yugoslavia and Romania. Its habitat is subalpine grassland and heath, extending to elevations above 2000m. Adults fly from April to September, with population peaks in May and August. The larvae feed internally on plants of the genus Sempervivum.
