About Chartoscirta elegantula (Fallén, 1807)

Chartoscirta elegantula (Fallén, 1807) is a species of shore bug that occurs across the Palearctic region. Adults of this species measure between 3.5 and 4.0 mm in length. It is most commonly found in marshes, or along the margins of rivers and lakes. This insect is an agile ambush predator that hunts small invertebrates, hunting both on the ground and within peat moss. Adult Chartoscirta elegantula hibernate, and they typically do so in dry ground materials including moss or dry leaf litter, often far from the habitats they occupy during the summer months. Its distribution covers Northern and Central Europe, the Northern Mediterranean, extends eastward all the way to Japan, and it is also found in the Middle East and India.
