About Charaxes wakefieldi (Ward, 1873)

Euxanthe wakefieldi, commonly called the forest queen, is a butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its scientific name is also referenced as Charaxes wakefieldi (Ward, 1873). This butterfly is distributed in South Africa, ranging from KwaZulu-Natal to Eswatini and north-eastern Limpopo, and extends northward into eastern Africa. Males have a wingspan of 65 to 72 millimeters, while females have a wingspan of 80 to 90 millimeters. Adult forest queen butterflies are active throughout the year, with their population peaking between March and June. The larvae feed on species from the genera Deinbollia (including Deinbollia oblongifolia), Sapindus, Blighia, and Phialodiscus. The larvae are notable for their spectacular horns.
