About Charanyca trigrammica (Hufnagel, 1766)
Charanyca trigrammica (Hufnagel, 1766) has a wingspan ranging 35–40 millimetres, or 1.4–1.6 inches. The forewing is whitish ochreous, finely dusted with olive brown, and sometimes carries a slight ochraceous or pinkish tinge. It typically has a darker shade just before the termen, and is crossed by three brown lines. Of these three lines, the inner line is somewhat oblique outwards, and the outer line is oblique inwards. The median line is generally a little thicker, and is sometimes followed by a distinct dark shade. The hindwing ranges from pale to dark grey, and its colour varies to match the forewing. Several different forms and variations of the species have been documented. In the form evidens Thnbg, the forewing is rufous ochreous or yellow ochreous, and the hindwing is darker. The rare form bilinea Hbn. has a dark coloured space between the inner and median lines, with the rest of the wing being reddish grey. In perrufa ab. nov. [Warren], the entire forewing is rufous, and the median shade is absent or obscure. obscura Tutt is dull olive fuscous, with the median shade barely visible, and the hindwing also dark fuscous. pallidalinea Tutt has the inner line obsolete, while the other two lines are pale. semifuscans Haw. retains the whitish ochreous ground colour of the type form as far as the median line, but the outer half of the wing is dark. The median line is followed externally by a dark shade, and a similar shade precedes the termen. The aberration fringsii Schultz has only one transverse line. Finally, erubescens Trti, a form from Sicily, is dark brown with the median line still present.
