About Channa punctata (Bloch, 1793)

Channa punctata, also known as the spotted snakehead, normally grows to around 15.0 cm (5.9 in) in length, though males up to 31.0 cm (12.2 in) have been captured. The IUCN lists the spotted snakehead as Least Concern, because there are no major threats to its populations. This species is mainly carnivorous. Its preferred foods include other small fish, yolk flies, and fish larvae. In its natural habitat, it consumes crustaceans, molluscs, insects, small fish, and semi-digested materials, and it sometimes eats plants. Its feeding habits change with the seasons. Feeding intensity is low in mature fish during the spawning period. Juvenile fish maintain a constant feeding habit.
