Chama gryphoides Linnaeus, 1758 is a species with shells that grow to between 20 and 28 millimetres (0.79–1.10 inches) in size. The shells are thick, heavy, nearly oval in shape, and inequivalve. The left valve is large and deep, while the right valve is flatter. The radial ribs of the shells are quite irregular and arranged in concentric rows. This species is distributed throughout the Mediterranean region, and it occurs at depths between 10 and 200 meters.
