About Chalcosyrphus piger (Fabricius, 1794)
Chalcosyrphus (Xylotomima) piger, first described by Fabricius in 1794, is commonly known as the short-haired leafwalker. This is an uncommon species of syrphid fly, also called a hoverfly. Hoverflies earn their name from their ability to stay nearly completely motionless while in flight. Adult hoverflies of this species are also known as flower flies, because they are commonly found around and on flowers, where they obtain energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. The larvae of this species have been found living in sappy hollows of Larix and Pinus trees. This species is distributed across Europe, Canada, and the United States; a distribution map is available for this species.
