About Chalcosyrphus nemorum (Fabricius, 1805)

This hoverfly species, Chalcosyrphus nemorum, has a wing length between 6.5 and 8.25 millimeters. Its hind femora are swollen and deep, while its hind tibiae are strongly curved, with a ventral surface covered entirely by closely spaced short black hairs. The abdomen is short, and tergites 2 through 4 each bear a pair of pink or orange-brown marks. The legs are black, with yellow knees and yellow tarsi. The larva of this species was illustrated by Hartley in 1961. Its distribution ranges from Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees, and from Ireland east through Northern, Central, and Southern Europe as far as South Italy. It extends across the Palearctic region into Russia, the Russian Far East, Sakhalin, and Japan. In the Nearctic region, it occurs from Alaska to Nova Scotia, and south to California.
