This species is scientifically classified as Chalcosyrphus chalybeus (Wiedemann, 1830). It is also called Chalcosyrphus (Xylotomima) chalybeus, and is commonly known as the violet leafwalker. It is a fairly common species of syrphid fly, also called hoverfly. Hoverflies are able to stay nearly motionless while in flight. Adult hoverflies are often called flower flies because they are commonly found on flowers, where they collect energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. This species has been recorded in the Northeastern United States. Its overall distribution includes Canada and the United States.
