About Chaetodon paucifasciatus Ahl, 1923
The Eritrean butterflyfish, also called the crown butterflyfish, has the scientific name Chaetodon paucifasciatus Ahl, 1923. It is a species of marine ray-finned fish that belongs to the butterflyfish family Chaetodontidae. It is primarily known to occur only in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, though there have been reports of it from East Africa. This species can grow up to 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) long. Its body is white marked with black chevron-shaped patterns, and it has a distinct red zone that extends from the rear dorsal fin across the caudal peduncle to the end of the anal fin. A vertical red bar runs through the caudal fin. It has black eye stripes and a black, white-bordered "crown" marking on its head. Eritrean butterflyfish are oviparous, and form monogamous pairs during the breeding season. They are typically found either in pairs or small groups, living over coral and rubble areas at depths between 1 meter and 30 meters. Their diet consists of coral polyps, gorgonians, algae, polychaete worms, and small crustaceans. This species adapts well to aquarium environments, so it is sought after by aquarium hobbyists.
