About Chaetodon baronessa Cuvier, 1829

This species, Chaetodon baronessa Cuvier, 1829, commonly called the eastern triangle butterflyfish, reaches a maximum total length of 16 cm. Its body is marked with a pattern of alternating chevron-shaped bars in cream and shades ranging from grey-brown to purple. Three dark bars run across its head, with one of these bars passing directly through the eye. The eastern triangle butterflyfish inhabits seaward coral reefs and lagoon coral reefs. Individuals typically swim in pairs and are territorial. This species feeds exclusively on the polyps of tubular Acropora corals.
