About Ceyx pusillus Temminck, 1836

The little kingfisher (Ceyx pusillus Temminck, 1836) measures 11.5 to 13 cm (4.5 to 5.1 in) in total length. It has a glossy deep-blue back and head, a bright snowy white breast, a heavy bill, and a short tail. Its feet are dark brown, with one rear-facing toe and only two forward-facing toes. This species is one of the smallest kingfishers in the world; only the African dwarf kingfisher is smaller. Males weigh 10–15 g (0.35–0.53 oz), while females weigh 10–14 g (0.35–0.49 oz).

The little kingfisher occurs in open forest, woodland, swamps, and mangroves across Australia (northern Queensland and coastal Northern Territory), Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It is generally an uncommon, sedentary species.
