About Ceriana abbreviata Loew, 1864

Ceriana abbreviata (Loew, 1864), commonly called the Northern Wasp Fly, is a rare species of syrphid fly that has been observed across North America including Canada. Members of this fly group, also called hoverflies, are able to stay nearly motionless while in flight. Adult individuals of this species are also referred to as flower flies, because they are commonly found on flowers, where they obtain energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. Adult Ceriana abbreviata are wasp mimics, while their larvae feed on sap that oozes from tree wounds.
