This fish species has 9 spines and 14 soft rays on its dorsal fin, and an overall deep red body color. The margins of its pectoral fins are yellow, which is the source of its common name reference. The fish has four canine teeth in its mouth, which it uses to grip and seize prey. This species is most commonly found in coral assemblages at depths slightly over 50 meters, and can also occur in rocky regions. It can reach a maximum length of 35 centimeters.
