About Centropyge loriculus (Günther, 1874)

This species, commonly known as the flame angelfish, has bright orange-red coloration. It features a vertically elongated black spot and four or five vertical bars on its sides, plus alternating short purple-blue and black bands on the posterior sections of its dorsal and anal fins. Specimens collected from the Marquesas Islands do not have these vertical black bars. Males are typically larger and have slightly more intense coloration than females. The flame angelfish has a typical life span of 5 to 7 years, and can live even longer. This fish lives in various reef habitats across Oceania. It is most common in the Marshall Islands, Line Islands, and Cook Islands, and occurs less commonly in the Hawaiian Islands. It is specifically found on the foreslopes of coral reefs and in clear lagoons.
