This species is Ceanothus papillosus Torr. & A.Gray. It bears evergreen leaves that grow in an alternate arrangement, often forming crowded clusters. Individual leaves are shaped from oblong to long-rectangular, and their surfaces are covered in glandular bumps. Leaf edges are generally rolled under and lined with glandular hairs. The plant produces an inflorescence made up of a cluster of bright blue flowers. Its fruit is a bumpy capsule roughly 3 millimeters long.
