About Caustis flexuosa R.Br.
Caustis flexuosa R.Br. is a species of sedge native to Australia. It is a graceful plant with attractive curling foliage, and reaches 120 centimeters in height. Its common names are curly wig and grandfather's beard. Flowering takes place in spring and summer; the flowers are thin, cream-colored, and around 5 millimeters long. After flowering, the plant produces a pale-colored nut that measures 3.5 to 5 millimeters long and 1.8 to 2.5 millimeters in diameter. This sedge grows on poor, granite- or sandstone-based soils in eastern Australia. In New South Wales, it occurs on the coast and tablelands, and is commonly found around Sydney and the Blue Mountains. It can be found as far west as Warrumbungle National Park and the area near Mudgee. In Victoria, it occurs across the southern half of the state, ranging from Croajingolong National Park in the east to Dergholm State Park in the west.
