About Catopsilia florella (Fabricius, 1775)
Catopsilia florella, commonly known as the African migrant, African emigrant, or common vagrant, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Pieridae. This butterfly is found in Africa (including Madagascar), Arabia (specifically the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Oman), and the Canary Islands. Similar to Catopsilia pomona, this species has migratory habits. Many early authors reported that Catopsilia florella occurs in Asia, but these records are likely the result of confusion caused by the extensive seasonal variation seen in female Catopsilia pyranthe. No recent checklists of butterfly species found in India include Catopsilia florella as a present species. Males of this species have a wingspan of 54โ60 mm, while females have a wingspan of 56โ66 mm. Adult butterflies are active year-round. In South Africa, adult Catopsilia florella migrate north-eastward from summer to autumn. The larvae of this species feed on Senna occidentalis, Senna septentrionalis, Senna petersiana, Senna italica, Cassia javanica, and Cassia fistula.
