About Catocala grynea Cramer

Catocala grynea, commonly known as the woody underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Pieter Cramer in 1780. It is distributed across North America, ranging from Ontario and Quebec, through Maine and Connecticut, south to Florida, west to Texas, and north through Iowa to Wisconsin and Minnesota. The wingspan of adult individuals measures 40–50 mm. Adult moths are active from May to September, with flight timing varying by location. This species likely produces one generation per year. The larvae of Catocala grynea feed on plants from the genera Crataegus, Prunus and Malus.
